Module 10: Mask making
The three masks that I chose to focus my inspiration on for this assignment were the Acient Chinese Culture masks. I decided to go with these mask because as a child my favorite childhood movie was Mulan. In that movie , even though it was a cartoon there was a lot of chinese culture masks present. I like the way these maks look because they have many different textures, shapes, colors and dimention to them.
With the first mask the desription would be having sphere like horns coming out of the head. The eyes are bulging out of their sockets. It has a teeth like a vampire, very sharp K9 teeth. The tounge has muiltple colors it, blue red and green, and it kind of resembles a rattle snake tounge. The face of the mask is painted blue. There is a middle eye that is centered right above both eyes. The eyebrows have flame like motion in them spiraling outwards. Around the mouth you can see the same thing the flame like motion. On the forehead around the eyebrows you a can see tiny little whit dots. In the spheres there are blue colored diamonds with gold trimming around them. The analysis would be the shape of spheres used to look like horns. The flames of the eyebrows to look like hair or movement to make it seem like the eyebrows are raised. The artist uses the same colors blue, red, gold, white and green so there is a sense of pattern.
The second mask description there are horns sticking out of both the top and bottom of the mask. On top of the mask there is also something that looks like a hat. Maybe a hemelt? But, it has chinese lettering on it in red and white speck dots. The base color of the mask is black but the other colors are very vibrant. This masks also has a mouth with large K9 teeth, this mask has an overly sized mouth. There are wave like patterns with gold and red coloring. The analysis of this mask would be the vibrant colors as contrasts. The color highlights reflect well off of the black base. Horn and K9 teeth the shape of shperes. The wave like pattern throughout the mask used as movement.
The third Mask has a blue base to it with a lot of pattern surrounding it. The eyes are very distinctive, the are sort or googly like a fish. The eyebrows are very small with red coloring. The ears of the mask represent fish tails. The mouth is much smaller compared to the two masks. This mask has a red beard attatched to it. On top of the mask there is a crown it has all types of rinestones attached to it. There is also feathers attached to each side of the mask. The analysis of this mask is the beard of thid masks gives texture. The rinestones on the crown is a sense of pattern. The feathers would also be considered texture but it would be more of movement in my opinion. This mask also has color contrast, the vibrant color red throughout the mask and the color blue as the base.
When creating my mask I was unsure of the way I wanted to go. I wanted to add dimention to my mask. Make its features pop out. Making my thumbnail sketch I thought my mask would be flat. After searching around the house for some extra arts and craft materials I began working on my mask. To give my mask some dimention I used tissue paper to make the eyebrows, mouth, and eyes. I used sponge balls and pieces of piping straws. For the anaylsis of my mask I used colors red, green, blue and yellow for repition. I used the tissue paper for lines and shape. The piping straws were used to create horns.
